Season 2010 - 2011

Málaga C.F's tenth campaign in the First Division was marked by the start of the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani presidency that brought with it hefty economic backing to enable Málaga's first team to be in the top ten of the championship. The veteran coach, Jesualdo Ferreira, took on responsibility for the sporting aspect of the squad, incorporating some of the best foreign players who still didn't have experience in the national elite. The Blues and Whites fans' excitement was tangible.

The start of the league was extraordinary, with triumphs in Getafe 3-5, in Zaragoza, with 0-5 in scarcely 35 minutes of the first half ,and the youth player, Juanmi, beating the league's previous youngest goal scorer record. However, it all went negatively at home with various defeats against some great rivals that made the team lose its composure in defence, match after match. After ten matches, and in the relegation position, Ferreira and his coaching staff were destitute and a new era began in the season with the arrival of the Chilean manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

The former Villareal and Real Madrid star found it difficult to put his mark on the team, but gradually the workings of the squad progressively improved. The results, however, arrived a little later and Málaga didn't get out of the lower end of the table. But the arrival in the winter transfer window of two players of international standing, Demichelis and Baptista, and latterly the goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, reversed the team's fortunes and gave it a shot at the championship. At the end it beat the results of the previous five seasons in the league, with Baptista the indisputable goal scoring star of the second half, racking up a total of nine out of eleven matches in the second round. The consequence of which was salvation in the 37th match and a good tenth season with 46 points.

The Venezuelan striker, Salomón Rondón, with 14 goals in the league and 2 in the 'Copa', was Málaga Club de Fútbol's highest goal scorer.
