SEASON 1996 1997

Season 1996 1997

After the previous season left a bad taste in the mouth, the club went on to build a new quality team with a good number of new signings. On this occasion, Pepe Cayuela, who had taken Almeria into the Second Division, occupied the chair. However the defeat against Cordoba resulted in his departure and Juan Carlos Añon, second trainer, coached the team for its visit at Carranza, where they were beaten 5-1. Next came the era of José Manuel Díaz Novoa, a far contrast to the others but after an irregular season he too did not get the desired results. Another year along and the project was not a success – the team once again finished in fifth position, with Ricardo Albis in charge of Málaga’s squad for the last game of the season.

Seville-born Manolo ended as top scorer ‘pichichi’ with 9 goals, closely followed by Manolo Herrero with 8 and Basti scored 7, with another goal in the Cup.
